Freak malware warning

Got a malware warning today, as I loaded my own page. Not sure how that happened, but since the warning I’ve:

  • Changed my FTP password
  • Changed my web host backend password
  • Deleted the old blog installation and re-built it in the timeframe of…15 minutes (This is new, despite the same look)
  • Dumped the database
  • Imported only the raw text from the old blog (Some posts which contain images are now bereft of those images).

Hopefully this got rid of any potential malware. I had previously removed some nasty redirects (also not sure how those got there), maybe this is fallout from that.

Site-wide refresh

Finally found some time to get Joomla 1.6 installed and set up, now it’s up and running, titled Project Endeavour. I ran into some trouble prior to that. But before going into details, you should have noticed that I ditched the sleek, iNove theme for this, LightWord. I’ve had LightWord set up on the site before, but only recently decided to make the switch since I was re-installing pretty much everything.
Wait, what? Reinstalling? Yep.

It started out with a simple act of setting up a limited access FTP account for Project Endeavour, but through silly blunders of mine, I ended up deleting the very folder that contained ALL my publicly-accessible documents. In other words, I deleted all my site content off of the host. Normally this would be a cause for ultra-concern. But thankfully, the platforms I use and deploy store their data in…databases. These were unaffected. All I had to do was manually re-configure brand new installations to use the old databases’ data. The sole downside of this incident was that I lost all my WordPress themes and plugins. So…in the spirit of re-loading the missing plugins and themes, I decided to wipe the unused content off of WP and just re-load the most used ones. I wanted to try WP3.0′s custom menus anyway, and iNove didn’t support that.

Lesson learned: keep backups? Nah, rather: don’t carry out live site changes when you’re not 100% alert!

Revival

Well well well, it’s been a good year and a half since I took my live development site off the ‘Net late 2008. In the meantime, several online endeavours (mostly for third parties) went up, but few stayed that way, so I’m glad to finally be able to bring back my OWN live dev site.

I’ll probably be keeping this blog as a technical/opinion shoutpad, and less of a personal “thoughts during the day” kind of a record, so with that in mind, please remember that I’m not out to attract readers; some of my opinions and thoughts may very well run contrary to popular/public opinion, and that may just push people away or attract some flak. If, or rather, when that happens, be prepared to see some fairly creative defences re. my opinions.
